Guncotton is made by nitrating cotton and was commonly used as a low order explosive, so think musketry - flint and tinder level technology from the 18th century on. It’s the source of that flash in old timey photography - an explosive burst of kinetic energy like the flash of imagery at the onset of a song, when we tap into some dimension where the waking mind is stilled and our emotions and thoughts are transformed into words and melody. I got the idea to make these recordings as stripped down, acoustic only performances and was inspired by my friends and jam sessions in Minneapolis the last couple of years hoping to create a more personal, direct approach in these songs. I went through some tough times leading up to this year; lost a good friend, ended a marriage, spent way too many hours on the road and couldn’t quite find a way to keep my band together. It’s better now, the wheels have turned around once more, I hope you enjoy the music and know that better days will come.
